Worked Examples

Example 1: Inverse Trigonometric Functions Prove that $\tan^{-1} \left(\frac{1}{2}\right) + \tan^{-1} \left(\frac{2}{11}\right) = \tan^{-1} \left(\frac{3}{4}\right)$.

Solution: We use the formula $\tan^{-1} x + \tan^{-1} y = \tan^{-1} \left(\frac{x+y}{1-xy}\right)$, provided $xy < 1$. Here, $x = \frac{1}{2}$ and $y = \frac{2}{11}$. $xy = \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{2}{11} = \frac{1}{11} < 1$, so the formula is applicable. LHS = $\tan^{-1} \left(\frac{\frac{1}{2} + \frac{2}{11}}{1 - \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{2}{11}}\right)$ = $\tan^{-1} \left(\frac{\frac{11+4}{22}}{1 - \frac{2}{22}}\right)$ = $\tan^{-1} \left(\frac{\frac{15}{22}}{\frac{20}{22}}\right)$ = $\tan^{-1} \left(\frac{15}{20}\right)$ = $\tan^{-1} \left(\frac{3}{4}\right)$ = RHS. Hence Proved.

Example 2: Differential Equations Find the general solution of the differential equation $\frac{dy}{dx} + \frac{y}{x} = x^2$.

Solution: This is a linear differential equation of the form $\frac{dy}{dx} + Py = Q$, where $P = \frac{1}{x}$ and $Q = x^2$. First, we find the integrating factor (I.F.): I.F. $= e^{\int P dx} = e^{\int \frac{1}{x} dx} = e^{\log|x|} = |x|$. We can take I.F. $= x$ (assuming $x > 0$). The general solution is given by $y (\text{I.F.}) = \int Q (\text{I.F.}) dx + C$. $y \cdot x = \int x^2 \cdot x , dx + C$ $xy = \int x^3 , dx + C$ $xy = \frac{x^4}{4} + C$ So, the general solution is $y = \frac{x^3}{4} + \frac{C}{x}$.

Example 3: Vectors Find the area of the parallelogram whose adjacent sides are given by the vectors $\vec{a} = 3\hat{i} + \hat{j} + 4\hat{k}$ and $\vec{b} = \hat{i} - \hat{j} + \hat{k}$.

Solution: The area of a parallelogram with adjacent sides $\vec{a}$ and $\vec{b}$ is given by $|\vec{a} \times \vec{b}|$. First, calculate the cross product $\vec{a} \times \vec{b}$: $$ \vec{a} \times \vec{b} = \begin{vmatrix} \hat{i} & \hat{j} & \hat{k} \ 3 & 1 & 4 \ 1 & -1 & 1 \end{vmatrix} $$ $= \hat{i}(1 \cdot 1 - 4 \cdot (-1)) - \hat{j}(3 \cdot 1 - 4 \cdot 1) + \hat{k}(3 \cdot (-1) - 1 \cdot 1)$ $= \hat{i}(1 + 4) - \hat{j}(3 - 4) + \hat{k}(-3 - 1)$ $= 5\hat{i} + \hat{j} - 4\hat{k}$ Next, find the magnitude of this vector: $|\vec{a} \times \vec{b}| = \sqrt{5^2 + 1^2 + (-4)^2}$ $= \sqrt{25 + 1 + 16}$ $= \sqrt{42}$ Therefore, the area of the parallelogram is $\sqrt{42}$ square units.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the constant of integration (C) in indefinite integrals.
  • Incorrectly applying chain rule, product rule, or quotient rule in differentiation.

  • Errors in matrix multiplication order (non-commutative).
  • Confusing scalar and vector products and their properties.
  • Incorrectly determining the feasible region in linear programming problems.
  • Ignoring the domain and range of inverse trigonometric functions when applying identities.
  • Using incorrect limits of integration for definite integrals, especially with properties.
  • Sign errors in determinant calculations or vector operations.
  • Applying Bayes' Theorem without correctly identifying $P(E_i)$, $P(A|E_i)$, and the total probability in the denominator.
