Ohm & Resistance

  • $V = IR$; $R = \rho L/A$; specific resistance depends on material and T.
  • Temperature coefficient: $R_T = R_0(1 + \alpha \Delta T)$.
  • Series: $R = R_1 + R_2$; Parallel: $1/R = \sum 1/R_i$.
  • Drift velocity $v_d = eE\tau/m$; $I = neA v_d$; mobility $\mu = v_d/E$.

Kirchhoff's Laws

  • KCL: $\sum I = 0$ at junction.
  • KVL: $\sum V = 0$ around loop.

Circuits

  • Cells in series: $E = E_1 + E_2$, $r = r_1 + r_2$.
  • Parallel: $E/r = \sum E_i/r_i$; $1/r = \sum 1/r_i$.
  • Wheatstone bridge (balanced): $P/Q = R/S$; no current in galvanometer.
  • Metre bridge: $R/S = l/(100-l)$.

Potentiometer

  • Compares EMFs: $E_1/E_2 = l_1/l_2$.
  • Internal resistance: $r = R(l_1 - l_2)/l_2$.

Power & Heating

  • $P = VI = I^2 R = V^2/R$.
  • Heat $H = I^2 R t$ (Joule's law).
  • Home power in kWh; unit rate calculations for bills.

Meters

  • Ammeter: low R in shunt; galvanometer + shunt $S = I_g G/(I − I_g)$.
  • Voltmeter: high R in series; $R = V/I_g − G$.

Extra

  • EMF vs terminal voltage: $V = E - Ir$ (during discharge); $V = E + Ir$ (charging).
  • Colour code (BBROY-GBV-GW): 0-9; tolerance gold ±5%, silver ±10%.
  • Junction potential in semiconductors — see semiconductor chapter for extension.
